It is a new craze of late to sew using laminated cotton. It comes in all your favourite designer prints and the best part is it's waterproof and easy to clean. There's also oil-cloth that has been around like almost forever and it's also water proof and easy to clean. So what's the difference between oil-cloth and laminated cotton.. Aren't they the same???

From my observation, they have similar characteristics (cleaning, sewing) except that laminated cotton is fancier and costs lots more.
I have acquired 2 half meters worth of vinyl coated fabric at the beginning of the year (lucky bag/ fukubukuro) and last week decided to put them to use. I made 2 non-reversible bucket bags. They draped well, smooth cutting and were easy to sew. They were not slippery or stiff. I used pins in the seam allowance and used my walking foot.
I used designer cotton (Lecien and Moda for the lining and added a zippered pocket inside and used strap webbing for the sides and handles.

All in all, a great experience, but I do not plan to stock up on either laminated cotton or oil-cloth in the near future.

Hi Sue, thanks for the Info! I've found some here in the Netherlands, very pretty but don't want to venture into that 'craze' pula, agree that it makes great bags and raincoats especially for kids :)

Princess Closet - Agreed!! not planning to start hoarding on laminated cotton pulak.. but gerammmmmm tengok all the pretty prints.. *sigh*
Wished I could make cute raincoats in those prints... *double sigh*
Thanks for the info...i was contemplating to use the laminated cotton for cloth diaper (siaper cover) but don't think it's a good idea as it might have smell and stain issues on the cotton side. What do you think? A craft shop near my place in PJ sells it quite expensive abt RM 60-70++ per meter.
opsiedaisy - I'm not really sure about laminated cotton as a diaper cover.. It might be stuffy with no air ventilation that might cause diaper rash or irritation for the baby's skin.. However, you should check with CD expert on the matter..
Hi Sue. Thanx for sharing the info. Do have a lot at my oil cloth bag collection at FB Page Maisara Marie Oil Cloth & Cotton Handmade Bags.
I prefer oil cloth than cotton because of less hassle (no batting/interfacing) and it does not fray. Besides, the finished product looks more presentable :).
