Reversible Bucket Bag - Sew Along Update

I am happy to announce we have 21 ladies who have sign up for the sew along. Everybody can still join in as we are only at the gathering stage (1 - 14 Feb), deciding on the fabrics we want to use for the bag, printing the pattern and getting our supplies (you can refer to page 42 on the pattern under *you will need* column).

I know we have spread out the stages over a long period of time. This to allow ample time for everyone to complete each stages and have time for our other commitments. If you complete the stage early, do still post pictures of all the steps for others to view and comment. *Would you want me to set up a sew along Flickr group? or would reporting on the blog suffice?*

I have not yet decided on the three 0.5m fabric pieces for my reversible bag, still contemplating *sigh*. The pattern also requires medium weight fusible interface (learn how to apply interface here) and fusible fleece. I have never used fusible fleece before and was wondering if anyone has and maybe would like to tell us about it *pwetty please*

If you have already decided on your fabrics, please let us know so we could all hop over to see them.

Excited! Flickr group is a good idea too...everyone can upload progress photos there and the discussion thread is useful for all of us to "duduk berbincang" ekeke...Fusible fleece - hmm....all this while I thought it's a special type of interfacing rupanya I've been using it for quite sometime before I realised it!

It's actually fusible polyester batting! Yup, the polyester bating is called fleece in the US, only cotton is considered batting. Jadi, the one with adhesive at the back is called fusible fleece. There are various thickness, I've used both thick and thin variety, depending on the look you want. Quite easy to apply with steam iron, not too hot or you'll fry the material (been there done that huhu).

No worries K.Ross, you can always join in the discussion and shed some light if we are stuck or confused.. :)

Zura, will wait and see what others feel about the Flickr group before I create one..

I have never come across batting that is adhesive.. I am confused.. :( From reading different articles/forum on the net, I know that fusible fleece and fusible interfacing are definitely 2 different things and are not interchangeable..

However, you can substitute the fusible fleece with regular batting or even white craft felt. It's main purpose is to give a softer padded structure to the body of the bag.

I dont really know what is it fusible fleece. I normally use fusible batting or fusible interfacing... satu lagi seems that at US there is brand name for interfacing or batting.. tapi kat KL ni I haven't found any. normally kalau interfacing, sell by meter, same as batting, without knowing brand apa. batting pon sama.

Sue, I would love to sew along!!!

Just like Mila experienced, fusible fleece is actually fusible polyester batting. It is different from woven/non-woven interfacing we use to interface the fabric tu. Kat sini ada jual Sue, and of course because supplies sellers in Malaysia source direct from manufacturers in China/Taiwan/Korea, they come in rolls and not repackaged and branded as Pellon etc like in the US.

I am pretty confident about this coz when I scrutinized all Googled fusible fleece photos, they look exactly the same as the fusible batting I bought at Craftworld hehe...

Mahal x fusible batting tu Zura?

I nak join in, tapi takut xsempat nak buat... Plus I saying nak buat bias binding tu, so kalau I join I guna cotton webbing kot to replace it hehe...

Zura said...

n.a.m - boleh tahan gak, RM26-28 semeter, kalau kat craftworld tu ada 2 jenis, nipis n tebal, tp yg nipis cepat tul abis huhu...selalu amoi tu dah potong semeter-semeter n lipat lam plastik...errmmm...sue dah jadi discussion thread comment post tuan rumah ni, bagus kalau kita discuss kat flickr group hehe...

Pls count me in, i'll see if i can cope

Zura said...

Anic - Yup!! that's it. All the sellers here in Malaysia call it iron on/fusible batting coz we're used to using polyester batting. Ha May ni jual murah how come I tak perasan? Okies now hopping over to flickr group let's discuss there ladies! :)

Sue, I am collecting small pieces fabric now for my first quilt project. Do you have any scrap fabric for grab?

MyBotanG said...

Will update the shoppe with scrap bags in 1-2 weeks time.. shall I reserve a bag or 2 for you..?

Bea said...

I'm hoping in :). I don't have any fusible fleece so I might be using batting instead & I think it's gonna need some quilting...& might end up looking like my sewing basket..hmm

sue..yana nak join gak..thanks..

Bea and Lyana - Welcome.. join us at http://www.flickr.com/groups/mybotang-sewalong/

Bea, we have been discussing about the fleece/betting thing more on the flickr group.. I have the same concern about the non fusible batting.. if i do not quilt it would it end up moving around and not look neat.. or looking like an oversize pot holder... uhuhuhuhuh
